youth-logo-11.jpgThe Public Services International World Congress held in September 2007 in Vienna, Austria, endorsed one person from each region to represent young people on the Executive Board., The PSI World Congress 2007 was very important to the young workers’ movement within PSI in strengthening the institutional support given to young workers. Following this decision, the Asia Pacific Regional Executive Committee (APREC) elected one person to represent the young people of that region on the Executive Board (Executive Board AP Young Workers’ Representative) and established the Asia Pacific Youth Network, hereafter referred to as AP-YN.

AP-YN provides young workers in Asia and Pacific with the opportunity of strengthening their voices and bringing young people together to look at new ways of involving young workers actively in public sector unions. AP-YN organises young workers aged 18 to 35 years old from PSI affiliated unions throughout the Asia and Pacific Region.

In principle, the AP-YN is a collective commitment among young workers in this region to engage in all aspects of PSI’s and its affiliates’ work in order to strengthen membership. Active participation of all young workers in the region is most welcome and any contribution will be much appreciated.

The AP-YN main role is to address young workers’ issues and organise young people in the public sector unions. It will be required to:

  • Establish, maintain, develop and co-ordinate various communication networks, through e-mail, among young workers throughout the region;
  • Organise, support and encourage young workers to actively participate in the trade union movement.
  • Establish and develop an effective strategy on recruiting young workers and setting up young workers’ structures and training programmes within PSI affiliated unions in the region.
  • Develop and coordinate young workers’ activities in the Asia and Pacific region;
  • Continue the publication of the existing bulletin Youth to Youth every two months and provide information through the AP-YN Website;
  • Maintain the AP Youth Database and provide information concerning young workers’ issues;
  • Work closely with other PSI regional young workers’ structures as well as other youth organisations by sharing information and knowledge;
  • Provide progress reports of activities and policy recommendations of young members to the SUBRAC, APREC and EB;
  • Report back to the AP Youth Net members.

In order to effectively coordinate the work of the AP-YN, two coordinators elected: Ms. Tan Sze Wei (Titular) from AUPE-Singapore (szeweithegreat@gmail.com) and Ms. Kuila Gavidi (Substitute) from FNA - Fiji (kuilagavidi@yahoo.com)

Ms. Indah Budiarti (PSI AP Organising and Communication Coordinator) is secretary for this network. The Secretary will work in close cooperation with the AP Youth Net Coordinator to ensure that the network functions effectively. The secretary will prepare and carry out the day-to-day work of the AP-YN. The work of AP-YN is under the supervision and guidance of the AP Regional Secretary.

APYN Rules and Procedure is a guideline for the work of the network. This was approved by The APREC Members on their meeting in Bali on 10-11 April 2008).
